Registrata da George Strait nel 1985 come secondo singolo dell’album “Does Forth Worth ever cross your mind” , “The Cowboy Rides away” è stata scritta da Sonny Throckmorton e Casey Kelly ( entrambi scrittori di testi musicali grande esperienza e più volte nominati agli awards).
E’ la canzone che Strait usa solitamente per chiudere i suoi concerti, ed è stata la canzone finale del suo ultimo tour del 2013 e conclusosi nel 2014 con un concerto di oltre 100.000 persone!
La canzone , che ha ricevuto il voto massimo (A Grade) dalla critica, racconta della fine di una relazione che non si è riusciti a ricucire.
